Mrsa And Great Britain

MRSA and Great Britain is a subject of interest for many people lately. It's estimated that there are more cases of this infection than ever and they are being seen outside of the normal hospital setting. MRSA stands for methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus and is a type of staph infection that doesn't respond to conventional antibiotic treatment. This strain of staph was discovered in the hospital setting several decades ago. The reason there is so much attention being paid to it lately is because there have been cases seen in people who are otherwise healthy and not in a hospital setting.

For example, MRSA has been seen in nursing homes, schools and fitness centers. The first symptoms of MRSA are skin lesions that resemble a spider bite, boil or pimple. The lesions may grow in size and develop abscesses. The danger comes when the bacteria spreads to the bloodstream and infects the vital organs and bones. This type of bloodstream infection can cause death if left untreated. The most important thing is that MRSA is diagnosed promptly and steps are taken to prevent the spread of the bacteria to others.

The first step if you think you may have MRSA is to see your doctor. He or she can do a nasal swab or skin culture to detect the presence of this type of staph. If MRSA is diagnosed the abscessed area may be drained and an aggressive antibiotic regimen of doxycycline and/or vancomycin. In severe cases, an intravenous treatment given in the hospital may be required. There are a few strains of MRSA that are hard to treat with even the strongest antibiotics, however most cases can be taken care of with the above mentioned medications.

MRSA and Great Britain is a subject that more people in the UK are concerned about. Because this type of infection has been seen in schools and other facilities besides hospitals, it serves the public well to learn as much as they can about how MRSA is prevented, spread and treated. Preventative methods may include frequent handwashing, avoidance of certain areas where MRSA is prevalent, proper disinfection of living and working areas, and not using other people's personal items like towels or razors. If you have questions about MRSA, your doctor can give you further information.
