Mrsa Pathophysiology

Understanding MRSA pathophysiology is something that should be done not only by those in the medical profession but by those in the community as well. Lately you may have heard about outbreaks of MRSA which occurred outside a hospital setting. This is rarely seen, which is why there has been so much coverage. Another reason for all the attention is because MRSA can be fatal and has been fatal in some of the most recent cases. MRSA stands for methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus and is a type of staph bacteria.

What makes MRSA so dangerous is how fast it can spread and how resistant it can be to traditional antibiotics. MRSA starts out on the skin and may resemble a pimple, boil or spider bite. From there, the condition may develop abscesses which may require surgical draining. The abscesses can allow the passage of staph bacteria into the bloodstream. Once there, it can quickly take over the body and infect the vital organs and even the bones. MRSA pneumonia is especially dangerous and can be deadly. If you have this you will be hospitalized and the staff who cares for you will have to wear special masks when caring for you.MRSA pneumonia can be spread by coughing.

If you think you might have MRSA, tell your doctor immediately. Your condition will be evaluated, most likely with a nasal swab or skin culture test. If a diagnosis of MRSA is made, you will be started on powerful antibiotics such as vancomycin or doxycycline. These antibiotics are more powerful than the usual antibiotics that are prescribed to treat regular staph infections. If the MRSA infection is mild, the doctor may drain the abscesses and hold off on the antibiotics. If the infection is severe, you may receive your antibiotics through an IV.

MRSA pathophysiology is something you can learn about by talking to your doctor. The CDC is another good resource. On their website you can learn plenty about this type of bacterial infection, how it is spread, how it is treated and how it can be prevented. Often prevention comes down to simple health habits like regular handwashing. Also, do not share personal items with other people. Personal items that may spread MRSA include towels, washcloths, clothing, razors and cosmetics.
