Mrsa Virus

The MRSA virus is a serious medical problem that can be fatal if not treated promptly. MRSA stands for methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus and is actually a bacteria rather than a true virus that is spread through the air. MRSA is actually a form of the quite common staph bacteria, however it differs from traditional staph in that it is resistant to treatment with traditional antibiotics. Because there have been a recent outbreak of MRSA cases in communities and schools, it is important for the public to know the symptoms, treatments and prevention methods for MRSA.

Symptoms of MRSA begin on the skin. There may be red bumps that resemble pimples, boils or spider bites. From there, the problem can become more serious. Abscesses can form which may need to be surgically drained. The worst case scenario is that the infection reaches the bloodstream. From here, it can infect the vital organs such as the heart, lungs, even the bones. The longer MRSA is left untreated the worse it can become. There have been recent deaths associated with MRSA which is why there has been so much media coverage on the subject.

The best thing you can do is practice good prevention. Wash your hands frequently, use hand sanitizer to kill germs, and make frequent use of disinfectants like Lysol. If you utilize a locker room or community shower facility like those at the gym or in school, wear footwear such as flip flops and do not share towels. In the event that you do notice a suspicious bump on the skin, seek medical attention immediately. There are tests that can be done to determine MRSA. If this bacteria is diagnosed the doctor will decide on the most effective treatment.

How the MRSA virus is treated will depend upon its severity and manifestation. For example, in early stages the skin abscesses may be drained in an attempt to prevent further infection rather than resorting to antibiotics right away. For infections that have progressed to a dangerous point, it is likely that the antibiotic vancomycin will be prescribed. Although there have been a few vancomycin resistant cases of MRSA, this antibiotic is effective most of the time. Because MRSA can be so dangerous and hard to treat, experts agree that good preventative practices are extremely important if you are at risk.
